The theft of valuable jewelry from Paris’ famous museum prompted officials to announce plans for a complete overhaul of its security system.

France’s Louvre Museum will install 100 external cameras by the end of 2026, its director told lawmakers on Wednesday, November 20th. Laurence des Cars was also outlining the institution’s security upgrades after the audacious October 19th daylight heist.

Four robbers escaped with $102 million (€88.5 million) worth of uninsured jewels—exposing major surveillance gaps along the museum’s outer walls and an unmonitored balcony used in the break-in.

Weeks later, two pranksters snuck a fake painting past security using a Lego frame and placed it in the same room as the Mona Lisa, showing how easy it was to bypass metal detectors.

Des Cars said cooperation with Paris police will be strengthened through the creation of an “advanced police station” on the museum grounds. The government has already announced additional measures to be set up by the end of the year.

Four suspects have been charged but the stolen treasures remain missing.
