The leader of the sovereigntist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) has accused French president Emmanuel Macron of intervening in Romania’s democratic institutions prior to the final round of voting in the country’s presidential elections.
In an interview on Thursday, May 15th, George Simion told French TV
I don’t respect Emmanuel Macron’s intervention in our democracy.
Telling the Francophone CNews channel of his love for the French people, he bemoaned the way that the “French ambassador has gone … through all regions of the country to convince businessmen to support my opponent, the mayor of Bucharest.”
Simion reminded viewers of the way the same ambassador, backed by Brussels, discussed the annulment of Romanian elections in 2024 with the president of the Constitutional Court responsible for the decision.
Speaking of France itself, Simion declared
You don’t know who you are anymore. It’s time to go back to tradition, and stop mutilating your children with sex reassignment surgeries. You hurt yourself. France—as a European, Christian country—will no longer exist.
Despite the hostility from Brussels toward the AUR, over such issues as Ukraine, transgender, and populism, Simion is expected to perform well in the pending presidential election.
