Beijing visit sees the French president tell his Chinese counterpart that France and China must overcome their “differences.”

President Emmanuel Macron of France appealed to Xi Jinping to help end the war in Ukraine and to address trade deficits, as the two leaders met in Beijing on Thursday, December 4th.

For Macron, making his fourth visit to China while in office, the three-day trip is an opportunity to build support for a ceasefire in the deadly Russo-Ukrainian conflict, while attracting more Chinese investment in France.

China—a major trading partner of Russia—has maintained a neutral stance on the war, refraining from condemning Moscow’s invasion.

On Thursday, Xi reiterated his support for ending the hostilities, telling Macron that

China supports all efforts toward peace and hopes that all parties will reach a fair, lasting and binding peace agreement acceptable to all sides.
