Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni has delivered a sharp rebuke to the European Union, warning that it risks sliding into geopolitical irrelevance.
Speaking in Rimini, the leader of the right-wing Fratelli d’Italia party urged the bloc to rediscover its roots if it is to meet the challenges posed by China and the United States.
She described the EU as “increasingly condemned to geopolitical insignificance” and unable to respond effectively to global competition.
She said she had long foreseen this outcome, stressing that the foundations of the EU and of democratic systems are now under threat from “cynical autocracies.” To maintain its influence, she argued, the Union must reconnect with its core values and heritage.
