German chancellor Friedrich Merz is “actively” supporting a proposed European Union ban on the Nord Stream pipelines. If successful, the block would prevent any restarting of gas supplies using the facility.

Three officials close to the matter have disclosed that the chancellor wants zero debate on reactivation. Adding Nord Stream to the EU sanctions list “potentially removes a political problem” for Merz, they said. Once again, compliance with Brussels would put national policy beyond the reach of citizens.

If correct, this would mean that Germany—like the EU—is putting its goal of supporting Ukraine against Russia ahead of the domestic energy needs of its citizens.

Previously Nord Stream has been subject to sabotage—not just political debate.
