After weeks of bargaining for peace between Russia and Ukraine, now the Ukrainian forces will be allowed to strike targets outside its territory.

On Monday, May 26th, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said key Western allies of Ukraine will no longer limit the range of use of the weapons supplied to the war-torn country. The news comes as troubling since the push for peace on Europe’s Eastern front seems to turn into further escalation fueled by Western EU allies.

“There are no longer any range restrictions on weapons delivered to Ukraine—neither by the British nor by the French nor by us nor by the Americans,” said Merz, explaining:

This means that Ukraine can now defend itself, for example, by attacking military positions in Russia

With very few exceptions, it didn’t do that until recently. It can now do that.”

Earlier, French President Emanuel Macron called for U.S. President Trump to turn his supposed anger with Russian head-of-state Vladimir Putin into action. President Macron advocated for an ultimatum to Russia, by giving a deadline for a ceasefire. “Beyond that deadline there should be massive retaliation, in particular in the form of sanctions,” said the French President, now apparently supporting military escalation and retaliation, not just economic sanctions.

In response, the Kremlin said on Monday that any Western decision to lift range limits on arms delivered to Ukraine would be “dangerous.”

“If these decisions have indeed been made, they are completely at odds with our aspirations for a political (peace) settlement… These are quite dangerous decisions, if they have been made,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian journalist Alexander Yunashev.
