His remarks come as senior CDU/CSU figures clash over returns to Syria

The German chancellor has stated that individuals who reach Germany after fleeing political or religious persecution will still be permitted to remain permanently. Merz stressed that such cases fall under permanent protection and that deportations are not an option.

By contrast, he drew a clear line regarding Syrians who came to Germany because of the civil war, saying their protection is temporary. Once the conflict ends, he said, they will be expected to return and rebuild their lives in their home country.

He also said he wants to explore, together with Syria’s new president, how Syrians could be encouraged to take part in reconstruction efforts after the war.
