Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Berlin will not back Western efforts to recognise a Palestinian state

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Tuesday that Germany will not join a Western initiative to recognise the Palestinian state at next month’s United Nations General Assembly.

Speaking at a joint news conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who recently confirmed Canada’s plan to recognise Palestine, Merz reiterated Berlin’s position:

The position of the federal government is clear, as far as the possible recognition of the state of Palestine is concerned. Canada knows this. We will not join this initiative. We don’t see the requirements met.

The statement follows similar announcements by France and Britain, both of which plan to formally acknowledge Palestinian statehood during the upcoming UN session.
