At least two people have died after a major earthquake hit southern and central Mexico on Friday, January, 2nd. The epicentre was near Acapulco, in Guerrero state, which suffered moderate damage. A 50-year-old woman was killed in Guerrero, while a 60-year-old man died in Mexico City, where 12 others were injured.
Officials have begun inspecting buildings and homes for damage, while roads, hospitals, and highways in Guerrero were affected by landslides.
By late Friday, power was restored to 98% of Mexico City after temporary outages. Mexico’s seismological service reported 420 aftershocks by midday local time and residents rushed into the streets after the earthquake alert sounded.
Mexico sits at the junction of four tectonic plates and has a history of deadly quakes, including a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in 2017 that killed over 200 people in Mexico City.
