Italian Il Giornale reports that in the crime-ridden North Italian city of Milan a “foreign national”—according to unconfirmed information, a Gambian citizen—was severely assaulted after he stole a mobile phone in an “ethnic” store.
The incident took place in one of the most crime-infested parts of the city, in the vicinity of the Central Railway Station on Sunday night. According to reports, the pickpocket, a foreign national, ran off with the smartphone of a 19-year-old Ukrainian—to his detriment. The Ukrainian man in fact pursued and caught him, and proceded to punch and kick him in what witnesses described as a brutal manner, joined by a still undentified person, wearing a motorcycle helmet.
Passersby, including a medical doctor, eventually put an end to the assault, with the victim lying senseless on the ground and the doctor resuscitating him. An ambulance then arrived and took the victim to hospital, where he remains in “a very grave condition.”
The Ukrainian man was detained, while the other person involved in the beating who had left the scene has still not been identified. Police are investigating the incident, reviewing video footage and collecting witness testimonies, Il Giornale said.
