Officials in central Ukraine say emergency repairs are underway—as UAV attacks hit multiple regions during sub-zero temperatures.

More than one million residents of Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region were left without water supplies or heating (or both) after overnight Russian strikes, a Ukrainian minister said on Thursday, January 8th.

The attacks form part of a broader pattern seen in previous winters, with Russia intensifying strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched 97 drones overnight, 70 of which were intercepted by air defences, while the remaining drones struck multiple locations. Officials in Dnipropetrovsk confirmed that critical energy facilities were damaged, complicating efforts to restore services.

The strikes also affected the Zaporizhzhia region, where power outages left thousands without electricity or heating. While electricity has been restored to essential facilities, most households remain without power, regional authorities said.

Ukraine has increasingly responded to attacks on its energy grid by targeting Russian oil depots and refineries, aiming to disrupt Moscow’s energy exports and place pressure on its fuel supplies.
