European leaders voice alarm that White House language now echoes Kremlin rhetoric, warning it could undermine NATO unity and weaken the West’s position on Ukraine.

Russia welcomes Donald Trump’s new National Security Strategy, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov:

The adjustments we’re seeing… are largely consistent with our vision.

Peskov’s interview—published by Russia’s state news agency Tass on Sunday, December 7th—discussed the 33-page U.S. document released this week, which notably adopts a softer tone toward Russia. Strategic ‘highlights’ include combating foreign influence, ending mass migration, and rejecting what it calls European Union “censorship.

EU officials have expressed concern that the report’s language could weaken collective Western efforts, particularly as negotiations continue over a peace deal in Ukraine. Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that matters of freedom of expression and societal organisation should not be part of security strategy, while Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasised that Europe remains the closest U.S. ally.
