New York City Democrats chose 33-year-old Muslim Socialist Zohran Mamdani as their mayoral candidate in the Tuesday, June 24th primary, stunning his opponent, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo.
In what appears to be the left-leaning city’s rebuke of the Democratic party’s veteran moderates, Mamdani led with 43% of the vote with 95% of ballots counted. Mamdani declared victory this morning (tonight in New York).
Mamdani is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. He speaks out for Palestinians and has accused Israel of “genocide.”
The democratic socialist described his vision for New York City’s future as a place “where the mayor will use their power to reject Donald Trump’s fascism, to stop mass ICE agents from deporting our neighbours, and to govern our city as a model for the Democratic Party.”
