“Do I think that when it comes to Ukraine, the U.S. and Europe can get on the same page? Yes, I’m positive,” Rutte said.

NATO Chief Mark Rutte said on Thursday, December 11th, that if the U.S. and European countries could agree on a plan to end the war in Ukraine, it would serve as a “test” of whether Russia “really wants peace.”

Speaking in Berlin, Rutte said

So far, Putin has only played the peacemaker when it suits him–to buy time to continue his war.

Rutte added that U.S. President Donald Trump “wants to end the bloodshed now” and is “the only one who can get Putin to the negotiating table.” “So let’s put Putin to the test. Let’s see if he really wants peace, or if he prefers the slaughter to continue,” he added.

Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday that they had sent Washington an updated plan for ending Russia’s invasion, building on the 28-point proposal presented last month by President Trump.

Previously, the U.S. had suggested that Ukraine should hand over the parts of Donbas it still controls to Russia. However, Washington is now proposing a compromise under which Ukrainian troops would withdraw from these areas, but Russian forces would not advance into them, President Zelensky said.
