In a letter to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Polish President Karol Nawrocki made it clear that his country won’t agree to the EU’s Migration and Asylum Pact, he said on X on Thursday.
Nawrocki’s letter, the post said, “firmly demands the exclusion of our Homeland from the EU’s illegal migrants relocation project. Poland first, Poles first!”
The Migration and Asylum Pact forces member states to either accept migrant quotas or pay financial penalties for refusing them and has been widely condemned as a form of blackmail by member states like Italy and Hungary.
In the letter, Nawrocki calls attention to growing migration pressure on Poland’s eastern border with Belarus and Russia and reminded von der Leyen that
As of 2025, Poland has accepted approximately 2 million Ukrainian refugees, with around 1 million currently residing in the country. Poland has also taken in 24,000 Ukrainian children orphaned due to the ongoing war. Poland continues to provide substantial humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
He also informed the Commission that Poland has declared a special state of emergency in its border regions to protect the European Union’s external frontier and prevent the “uncontrolled influx of illegal migrants,” noting that the measure has been extended several times due to ongoing security concerns.
