Poland’s president extends refugee protections but closes loopholes critics say were draining resources.

Poland’s national conservative president, Karol Nawrocki, has signed into law a measure granting temporary protection to Ukrainian refugees while tightening benefit rules to make support fairer and more sustainable.

Since the start of Russia’s war on Ukraine, Poland has welcomed over one million Ukrainian refugees, the vast majority women and children.

Nawrocki had vetoed an earlier draft in August, calling for limits on certain benefits to prevent misuse and keep aid focused on those genuinely in need. The government responded with a revised bill, which the president signed on Friday.

Poland remains one of Kyiv’s strongest allies and the key transit route for Western arms and humanitarian aid.

The government said the new law targets “abuses related to the payment of family benefits,” especially for Ukrainians no longer living in Poland, and clarifies the legal status of refugees residing in the country.
