German prosecutors say the Syrian refugee used a hammer and axe in the assault, but his intentions remain a mystery as investigations continue.

German prosecutors said Friday, July 4, they had not yet determined a motive for a violent attack on a high-speed train but added that tests had revealed the suspect had had drugs in his system.

The suspect is alleged to have used a hammer and an axe during the attack, which took place on a high-speed service as it passed through the southern German state of Bavaria on its way from Hamburg to Vienna.

The Austrian interior ministry said on Friday that the suspect arrived in Austria as a minor and had been accorded refugee protection in 2022.

However, this year he was convicted of bodily harm and obstruction of justice, and a procedure was underway to strip him of his asylum status.
