The collapse of the train station triggered multiple protests in Serbia, with former government officials allegedly responsible now in police custody.

The Supreme Court in Belgrade has confirmed that it has issued a one-month detention order for 13 individuals suspected of corruption linked to the reconstruction of the Novi Sad railway station.

Among those detained are former high-ranking officials, including ex-Ministers of Construction Tomislav Momirović and Goran Vesić. Tomislav Momirović, along with 11 other suspects who have been questioned, has denied any wrongdoing in connection with the multi-million-dollar project.

According to Serbian authorities, the accused collectively caused an estimated $115 million in damage to the state budget during the reconstruction and modernization of the railway line, a flagship infrastructure project intended to improve transportation links with Hungary.

The corruption investigation follows a tragic incident on November 1st, 2024, when a station canopy at the newly reconstructed Novi Sad railway station collapsed just four months after the official reopening. The collapse claimed the lives of 16 people and has since triggered widespread protests against corruption.
