Hungarian conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orbán slammed German MEP Manfred Weber on Tuesday, accusing him of prioritizing war over peace in Ukraine and warning that EU support for Kyiv is a “huge mistake.”

Orbán criticized Weber’s push to escalate the war in Ukraine, accusing him of prioritizing conflict over peace and ignoring the interests of European citizens.

Weber, the president of the European People’s Party (EPP), declared at a press conference on Tuesday that his party would support Ukraine using all available means. He made it clear that, regardless of the consequences, the EPP stands fully behind Kyiv. This aggressive stance, which aligns with prolonging the conflict rather than resolving it, once again placed Weber in direct opposition to Hungary’s call for peace and diplomacy.

In response, Prime Minister Orbán took to social media with a strongly worded rebuttal. He reminded Weber that Hungary’s entry into the European Union was mutually beneficial for all member states. “It was a good deal. It was a good deal for Germany as well, Herr Weber,” Orbán wrote.

He then sharply criticized the idea of Ukraine joining the EU, calling it a strategic error. “Ukraine is not an added value but a liability,” he stated, warning that bringing the war-torn country into the union would only destabilize Europe further.

Orbán also condemned the EU’s decision to continue pouring funds into Ukraine, arguing that this money should be used to boost the economies of current member states instead. “It’s a huge mistake to waste European resources on an endless war,” he said, stressing that Europe’s competitiveness and long-term stability are being neglected.

The prime minister concluded his message with a pointed challenge to the EU leadership: “Time for the European leaders to represent the European people, Herr Weber!”
