Preparations for a potential U.S.-Russia peace summit between presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are ongoing, with Budapest confirmed as the planned venue.
Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán wrote on social media that “when the time comes, we will organize it,” although the exact date of the summit remains uncertain.
Orbán also highlighted Hungary’s role in promoting peace, stating:
And of course, tomorrow, at the Peace March, we will show the world that Budapest was not chosen by chance. It happened because Hungary is an island of peace, and Hungarians stand for peace.
Trump had previously postponed attending a proposed summit in Budapest, telling reporters during a previous Oval Office briefing that he did not want to participate in a “wasted” meeting.
Dániel Deák—senior analyst at the 21st Century Institute—commented on the situation, noting that preparations for a presidential-level meeting “
are always lengthy, with consultations and negotiations constantly taking place in the background…. Both the American and Russian presidents have confirmed that if they meet, they will meet in Budapest.
Deák says a new announcement regarding the summit “is expected in the coming days.”
The analyst emphasized that Trump and Putin will only meet if “all the details are worked out in advance by the parties and there is something to sign and something to agree on at the presidential level.”
Meanwhile, Hungarian foreign minister Péter Szijjártó is in Washington as part of ongoing preparations for the summit.
