Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has declared that plans to seize frozen Russian assets within the European Union have collapsed, citing the emergence of a blocking minority among member states.
In a message posted on X by government spokesman Zoltán Kovács, Orbán said there was now “no chance of a majority” backing the proposal and reiterated Hungary’s refusal to participate in financing the war in Ukraine through joint EU borrowing.
He argued that Hungary’s constitution sets clear legal limits on such measures and insisted that public funds should be directed toward promoting peace rather than prolonging the conflict.
