Cameroon’s President Paul Biya was sworn in Thursday, November 6th, for an eighth seven-year term. His re-election followed a disputed October vote that triggered mass protests and a violent crackdown.
Official results gave Biya 53.7% of the vote, while opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary claims victory and continues to call for protests.
Several people have died in the unrests, drawing condemnation from the European Union, the African Union and the United Nations.
Biya, in power since 1982, faces ongoing criticism for authoritarian rule, economic struggles and separatist violence.
