A petition in support of the French policeman who was unfairly charged with the murder of a migrant has reached more than 340,000 signatures.

The officer who fired the shot that killed Nahel Merzouk, a 17-year-old French-Algerian in 2023, claimed that during a routine check of the vehicle that Merzouk was driving illegally, the young man drove the car at him, and he therefore opened fire in self-defence.

The incident sparked a wave of riots across France.

Even though an official investigation had established that the policeman’s version of events was true, last week he was charged with murder.

A petition launched by the Institut pour la Justice think tank to support the policeman’s fight for justice, has reached more than 340,000 signatures.

“While his victim was known to the justice system, this policeman is a decorated civil servant, father, and former soldier who fought in Afghanistan,” the website reads, adding that the police officer is being “sacrificed because of the incompetence of the state.”

The petition currently cannot be accessed as it has been the target of a cyberattack in recent days—likely by left-wing, pro-migration forces who are ignorant of the facts.
