Football fans all around Poland have been holding up banners during matches to warn citizens of the dire consequences of voting for liberal Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski at the upcoming presidential elections on May 18th.
Over the weekend, fans of Radomiak Radom held up a banner, displaying the words: “18.05—ANYONE BUT TRZASKOWSKI!”
During another match, Zagłębie Lubin fans held up a banner, stating: “Vote wisely so you don’t wake up in a rainbow Poland!” The words were a reference to Trzaskowski’s promotion of LGBT causes.
Similar signs were present only a week ago at the Polish cup final where fans of Legia Warsaw displayed a banner referring to the first and second round of the presidential election: “May 18, June 1—Don’t let deceitful, rainbow Rafał rule Poland.”
The movement appears to be gaining momentum, with fans of Cracovia, Lech Poznań, and Polonia Warsaw all displaying politically charged messages attacking Trzaskowski.
Fans of Jagiellonia recently unfurled a banner with no mention of any politician, but their message was unmistakable: “Family, patriotism, Christianity, tradition, security, sovereignty. May 18— choose a normal Poland!”
Rafał Trzaskowski’s main rival at the elections will be conservative Karol Nawrocki who has stated that he intends to fulfill his duties as president as a “Christian and a Catholic.”
Without providing any evidence, liberal Sports Minister Sławomir Nitras called the unveiling of the banners as “a coordinated action by Mr. Nawrocki’s campaign team.”
