Poland has recalled its ambassador from Hungary in response to what it described as a “hostile act” by the Hungarian government: granting political asylum to former Polish Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski.
The Polish foreign ministry announced the move on Thursday, July 17th.
Hungary granted political asylum to Marcin Romanowski last year, emphasising that the current liberal Donald Tusk-led government in Warsaw is using criminal law as a weapon against its political opponents.
Hungarian deputy foreign minister Levente Magyar called Poland’s move to withdraw its ambassador an “unfortunate step.”
Nevertheless, we consider this a temporary situation … Despite the current political disagreements, we remain open to dialogue and are hopeful that better times will come again for the alliance between our two countries.
Romanowski himself reacted on the social media platform X, writing that this is “yet another globalist blow against the historic Polish-Hungarian friendship.”

But President Nawrocki takes office in a few weeks, and with him comes hope to move forward. No globalist puppet will destroy the brotherhood between our nations.
Ties have strained between Hungary and Poland since Donald Tusk came to power in Warsaw at the end of 2023.
