Warsaw steps up civil defence spending—with billions of zloty earmarked for shelter upgrades and population protection in 2025 alone—as a smartphone tool responds to fears of wars to come.

Poland’s interior ministry has launched a new mobile application and website enabling users to find the nearest bomb shelter in the event of war or other emergencies. The service, called Where to Hide (Gdzie się ukryć), is already available online.

Using a user’s location, the system displays nearby designated shelters and the fastest routes to reach them. However, early tests show that the app currently provides limited information, listing only locations and basic accessibility, without details on shelter type or capacity.

Authorities say the tool is still under development and will be expanded as Poland continues to strengthen its civil defence infrastructure following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
