An Eritrean man with a history of violent crime was shot by police after a knife attack inside an electronics store in the German city of Ulm left one victim fighting for his life.
The 29-year-old suspect attacked two men shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, stabbing a 25-year-old so severely that he remains in critical condition. A second victim, aged 22, suffered minor injuries.
After the attack, the suspect fled the store but was quickly tracked down by police nearby. Officers said he continued to threaten them with the knife and repeatedly ignored orders to drop the weapon.
Police then opened fire, hitting the man several times. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and is currently receiving intensive care.
Authorities later confirmed that the suspect had a record of violent offences and had only been released from prison in December 2025. Investigators plan to seek an arrest warrant once he is medically fit to be questioned.
The shooting is now under investigation by the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office (LKA), working alongside the Ulm public prosecutor. Ulm police are separately examining the circumstances of the knife attack itself.
Separately, recent figures from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office show that non-German suspects account for more than 40% of recorded crimes nationwide, while foreign nationals now make up over one third of the prison population.
