A new report claims that the belief in impartial British policing has been seriously undermined in recent years.
According to author Hardeep Singh, the police respond differently to crime, protests, and disorder depending on the identity of the groups involved. His new report, The Many Tiers of British Justice: When Identity Politics and Progressivist Causes Trump Impartial Policing, was published on July 7 by the think tank Civitas and is available for download.
Public concern is growing over whether British policing now treats people differently based on their ethnic or religious background. Singh examines recent incidents in Birmingham, Bristol, and Harehills (Leeds), along with past Notting Hill carnivals and pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
His report also drew media attention from The Sun for highlighting the controversial use of ‘non-crime hate incidents’ (NCHIs), which can carry serious consequences for individuals despite no law being broken.
Public belief in a two-tier justice system intensified after the government’s handling of riots following the 2024 Southport murders. While officials dismissed concerns as right-wing conspiracy, Singh’s report reinforces what many Britons already suspected.
