The leading conservative candidate in the upcoming Polish presidential election, Karol Nawrocki, has accused the secret service of interfering in the campaign by trying to discredit him.
The elections are set to be held on May 18th, and the gap between Nawrocki, an independent candidate supported by the conservative opposition PiS party, and Rafał Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw from the governing Europhile PO party, is narrowing.
Nawrocki believes that the state security services have leaked information about him to the press to taint his image.
Nawrocki’s spokesperson, Emilia Wierzbicki, said that the services have engaged in a “dirty campaign.”
She was responding to a report by news website Onet, which accused Nawrocki of lying about the number of apartments he owns.
The politician has had to get security clearance as the head of the Institute of National Remembrance, a state research institute, and, according to his spokesperson, the information regarding his apartments comes from his personal security questionnaire.
Nawrocki, too, suggested that the state security services were behind the story. He said they had “joined the Polish institutions helping Rafał Trzaskowski.”
