The Russian president’s visit highlights the growing alignment between Moscow and Beijing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Tianjin, China, for a major summit hosted by President Xi Jinping, bringing together around 20 world leaders.

The two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting is expected to highlight growing unity among Global South nations and promote a vision of a post-U.S.-led international order.

Ahead of the visit, Putin gave an interview to Chinese state media and news agency Xinhua, where he condemned Western sanctions and emphasized Russia and China’s shared opposition to “discriminatory” global trade measures.

The summit, attended by the heads of state and government of, among others, India and Pakistan, is seen as a diplomatic boost for Moscow which continues to face isolation and sanctions over its war in Ukraine.
