Russia signals readiness to play a diplomatic role as Moscow steps up engagement with Tehran amid escalating regional tensions.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has said he is ready to help mediate efforts toward a peaceful resolution in the Middle East during a call with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian.

According to a Kremlin readout of the call, President Vladimir Putin emphasised Russia’s willingness to support a political and diplomatic settlement to the ongoing conflict and to facilitate efforts aimed at achieving a “just and lasting peace” in the region. The call highlights Moscow’s intention to position itself as a potential mediator at a time of heightened instability.

The conversation comes amid continued tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, with concerns growing over a wider regional escalation. Russia has maintained close ties with Tehran while also seeking to preserve its influence across the broader Middle East.

Analysts say Moscow’s offer reflects both a strategic opportunity and a diplomatic calculation, as it attempts to expand its role in global crisis management while balancing competing alliances. The move also signals that Russia is seeking to remain a key player in shaping any eventual negotiations over the conflict.
