On Sunday morning, the U.S. Secretary of State landed in Geneva where American, Ukrainian, and European officials are gathering to discuss President Donald Trump’s peace plan.

Marco Rubio’s plane touched down in Switzerland shortly before 9:30 a.m., where he is taking part in high-level talks on the United States’ peace plan for Ukraine, AFP reports. Senior security officials from France, Germany, the UK and Italy are also participating in the meetings, as Ukraine’s allies attempt to rewrite Donald Trump’s proposal,  which they argue would favour Russia.

The Geneva talks are being held at the level of national security advisers. The EU is expected to be represented by Bjoern Seibert, Chief of Staff to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, along with Pedro Lourtie, Chief Adviser to European Council President António Costa.

Among other points, European officials are expected to urge Trump’s team to soften its proposal concerning the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. The Europeans would prefer a ceasefire based on freezing the conflict along the current “line of contact,” which they see as a starting point for negotiations rather than a final settlement.

Italian news agency ANSA reports that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South-Africa that the United States is essential for reaching a solution. She expressed confidence that Washington’s accelerated push to end the conflict could become an unmissable opportunity in which Europeans must coordinate their diplomatic and media efforts and move in the same direction. “Italy is ready to collaborate with its European and American partners to achieve a just peace.” A phone call with Donald Trump doesn’t appear to be in sight at the moment, the agency said, but the Americans’ stance will be monitored by Palazzo Chigi’s diplomatic advisor, Fabrizio Saggio, who has left South Africa to fly to Geneva.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on social media on Saturday: “Europeans must support the United States’ peace initiatives immediately and unconditionally,” adding that Hungary “does not support the European Union providing any further financial assistance in any form.”
