U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be travelling to Germany on February 13-15 to attend the Munich Security Conference, the Department of State (DoS) said on Monday, February 9th.
According to the DoS, Secretary Rubio will then travel to Bratislava, Slovakia and Budapest, Hungary on February 15-16.
In Bratislava, Rubio will meet “key members of the Slovak government to advance shared regional security interests, strengthen bilateral cooperation on nuclear energy and energy diversification, and support Slovakia’s military modernization and NATO commitments,” while the Budapest trip will focus on the two countries’ “commitment to peace processes to resolve global conflicts and to the U.S.-Hungary energy partnership.”
Secretary Rubio is scheduled to hold high-level talks with Hungarian officials on February 16th. The visit is widely seen as politically significant, with conservative analysts suggesting it may serve as groundwork for a potential visit by U.S. president Donald Trump to Hungary.
Trump has repeatedly spoken positively about Orbán, praising the Hungarian prime minister’s “bold leadership” and calling it an example to leaders worldwide. He has highlighted Orbán’s consistent defense of faith, family, and national sovereignty, adding that such principles are admired by the United States.
