The Russian army made steady gains in Ukraine in October, as it focused attacks on the eastern Donetsk region, an AFP analysis of data from the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has shown. The area has experienced intense fighting, with local authorities working to maintain control over key cities, including Pokrovsk.

The ISW data, which draws on the Critical Threats Project, indicates that Russian forces captured 461 square kilometres in October, consistent with the average monthly gains observed this year. In total, Russia now controls 81% of Donetsk.

Recent reports note activity around Pokrovsk, with military units engaged in operations to maintain control of the city. Nearby Myrnograd has also seen increased military activity. In addition, Russian forces reportedly took 150 square kilometres in the Dnipropetrovsk region, west of Donetsk, over the month.

Across Ukraine, areas under Russian control or claimed by Russian authorities account for 19.2% of the country, including Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk.
