Russia has accused Ukraine of launching drone attacks on a Greek-owned oil tanker off its coast in the Black Sea on Tuesday, January 13th—marking the latest incident in a series of maritime confrontations in the region.
According to the Russian defence ministry, the tanker Matilda—flying the Maltese flag—was struck by two unmanned aerial vehicles approximately 100 kilometres from the city of Anapa in Russia’s Krasnodar region. Moscow did not mention a second tanker, Delta Harmony, in its statement. Kyiv has not yet commented on the allegations.
The attack comes amid ongoing Ukrainian drone operations targeting Russian energy infrastructure.
Kazakhstan condemned the attacks on Wednesday. The Kazakh foreign ministry expressed “serious concern” over the incidents, noting that the strikes affected tankers en route to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium’s marine terminal in the Black Sea and posed growing risks to international energy infrastructure.
Greece’s foreign ministry also condemned the attacks and announced that the matter would be discussed with its European Union partners.
