Norway’s government claimed on Tuesday, September 23, that Russia had violated Norwegian airspace three times this year.
A Russian fighter jet entered Norwegian airspace for four minutes on April 25, a transport plane for three minutes on July 24, and another fighter jet for one minute on August 18.
“We cannot determine whether this was done intentionally or due to navigation errors. Regardless of the cause, this is not acceptable,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said in a statement.
“The events in Norway are smaller in scale than the violations against Estonia, Poland, and Romania, in terms of both location and duration,” he added.
Nevertheless, these are events we take very seriously.
A NATO member, Norway is considered the alliance’s “eyes and ears” in the north, sharing land and maritime borders with Russia. It has previously pledged fighter aircraft to Ukraine.
