A Russian attack overnight left parts of Ukraine’s southern Odesa region without electricity early Saturday, the latest blow to the country’s energy grid ahead of winter.
Regional authorities said the strikes hit both energy and civilian infrastructure on Friday, as repair crews worked to restore power.
Ukraine’s energy company DTEK reported outages across parts of the regional capital, later saying it had restored electricity to more than 240,000 households.
The blackouts came a day after a large Russian airstrike knocked out power to much of Kyiv and nine other regions. DTEK said early Saturday that power had been restored to over 800,000 homes in the capital following that attack.
Moscow has targeted Ukraine’s power network every winter since its 2022 invasion, cutting electricity and heating to millions of people and disrupting water supplies. Russia denies targeting civilians, saying Ukraine’s energy facilities support the military. Kyiv insists the strikes are aimed squarely at civilians.
