The ex-president risks six months under home arrest with electronic monitoring if his conviction is upheld.

On Wednesday, October 8th France’s top court is scheduled to review former president Nicolas Sarkozy’s appeal against his conviction for illegal use of campaign funds in 2012

Sarkozy faces other charges of corruption, bribery, influence-peddling and illegal campaign financing, including a separate case concerning alleged Libyan funding of his 2007 campaign. He denies the accusations.

If his conviction is upheld, he will serve six months under electronic monitoring, following a reduced sentence from 2024. At the age of 70, he could also become the first post-war French leader to go to jail.

Despite his legal troubles, Sarkozy remains influential on the French right.
