The former French president was convicted of using Libyan funds—but cleared of corruption and embezzlement.

A court in Paris on Thursday, September 25th, found Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of criminal conspiracy. The former president of France was convicted of using illicit Libyan money for his campaign in 2007.

Judges convicted Sarkozy of criminal conspiracy over claims that Colonel Gaddafi of Libya funded his successful 2007 presidential campaign, but he was acquitted of corruption and embezzlement charges.

Sarkozy denies any wrongdoing in the Libyan case, and he is expected to appeal the verdict. The trial’s conclusion is the most serious blow yet to the reputation of a politician still admired by much of the French Right and supported by President Macron—despite a growing criminal record.
