On Monday, September 29th, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that Russia was likely behind recent mysterious drone flights over several Scandinavian airports, just ahead of an EU summit in Copenhagen.
Since September 22nd, drone sightings—particularly over Norway and Denmark—have forced the closure of multiple airports.
Speaking to broadcaster TV4, Kristersson said, “the likelihood of this being about Russia wanting to send a message to countries supporting Ukraine is quite high,” but emphasized that “nobody really, really knows.” He added that “we have confirmation“ that drones that entered Polish airspace earlier in September were Russian.
With Copenhagen set to host an EU summit on Wednesday and Thursday, Denmark announced on Sunday that it would close its airspace to all civilian drone flights until Friday, preventing potential confusion with hostile drones. Justice minister Peter Hummelgaard said the restriction will help police focus on genuine security threats.
Moscow has “firmly rejected” any claims of involvement, however, the recent drone sightings follow similar incursions into Polish and Romanian airspace, as well as Russian fighter jets violating Estonian airspace, escalating tensions.
