“The agreement will require compromises that not everyone will like,” Sebastian Kurz says.

Former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz hailed the planned Budapest summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, as a historic chance for peace and praised Hungary’s role in fostering dialogue.

Kurz emphasized that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his government should be rightly proud:

Hungary is creating the practical conditions for all sides to come to the table. This is pragmatic diplomacy.

He opined that the current developments have global significance, extending well beyond Europe. He praised Trump’s recent diplomatic efforts, citing the Gaza peace declaration signed with Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and other Arab nations as an example of Trump’s ability to “act and deliver results,” rather than merely talk.

Sebastian Kurz said the sanctions and isolation have not brought Russia to its knees, but the economic situation in Russia is anything but positive, concluding

This war produces no winners, only losers on both sides. Budapest offers the opportunity for a peace settlement that will enable both sides to break this impasse.
