Serbia Arrests 11 Over Hate Attacks in France and Germany

Serbian police arrested 11 people on Monday, September 29th, in response to alleged hate-driven coordinated actions against religious Jewish and Muslim sites in France and Germany,

The group reportedly conducted several attacks between April and September, targeting Jewish and Muslim communities amid rising tensions over the Israel-Hamas war.

By vandalizing religious and cultural locations in France, using paint, stickers depicting violent content, and dumping pigs’ heads—some marked with President Emmanuel Macron’s name—the group may have amplified existing fears of social breakdown (and even ‘civil war’).

Similar messages appeared in Germany at the Brandenburg Gate. French authorities suspect foreign interference, possibly linked to Russia, amid a rise in so-called hate incidents since late 2023.

The 11 suspects now face charges including racial discrimination and espionage. They were arrested in Belgrade and the nearby town of Velika Plana in coordination with Serbian security services. French investigators traced a Serbian-registered car and a Croatian phone number to several of the attacks.Police are also examining posters placed on the Arc de Triomphe showing a Russian soldier with the slogan “Say thank you to the victorious Soviet soldier.”
