Serbia’s parliament on Friday approved a lex specialis to fast-track redevelopment of the former Yugoslav Army headquarters in Belgrade, a major project involving Jared Kushner’s investment firm.
The bill designates the scheme as a project “of importance for the Republic of Serbia,” requiring authorities to prioritise planning and permitting. The landmark complex—heavily damaged during NATO’s 1999 bombing campaign—is expected to host a luxury hotel, 1,500 homes and a museum, according to the New York Times.
The building, designed in the socialist era and partly demolished for safety reasons, had been listed as a protected cultural monument. The project was temporarily halted in May after a criminal probe into allegedly forged documents lifting those protections.
