A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after driving his car into pedestrians in the city of Derby on Saturday evening, injuring seven people, police said.

The incident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. local time, when a driver of a black Suzuki Swift struck a group of pedestrians in the city north of Birmingham. Emergency services responded quickly, treating victims at the scene before transporting them to hospital. Authorities confirmed that all seven victims sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries, and that no fatalities had been reported.

Police said the suspect was detained shortly after the incident and faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and grievous bodily harm with intent. Investigators emphasised that the inquiry remains ongoing and that they are “keeping an open mind” regarding the motive behind the attack.

In a notable move, police disclosed that the suspect is originally from India but had been living in the UK for a number of years.

The Derby Constabulary on Sunday morning issued a statement saying “Although counter terrorism officers are assisting us with those early investigations, this does not mean the incident is currently being treated as terrorism.”
