Spain’s chief prosecutor, Álvaro García Ortiz, went on trial on Monday, November 3rd, for allegedly leaking confidential legal information to harm the conservative opposition.
He is charged of disclosing files about Alberto González Amador, the partner of Madrid’s right-wing leader Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who is under investigation for tax fraud. The Popular Party claims the leak was politically motivated to damage Ayuso, while García Ortiz denies any wrongdoing.
His lawyers argue he is the victim of a political campaign by Ayuso’s team to divert attention from the tax case.
The trial, held in the Supreme Court, runs until November 13th and includes 41 witnesses. The case adds to a series of corruption probes surrounding Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government.
