Spain’s Attorney General has resigned just days after the Supreme Court suspended him for two years and fined him for disclosing confidential information about Alberto González Amador, partner of Madrid regional leader Isabel Díaz Ayuso.

Álvaro García Ortiz informed Justice Minister Félix Bolaños in a letter, citing respect for the court’s ruling and his desire to protect the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The resignation takes effect once approved by the Council of Ministers and published in the Official State Gazette.

The court also ordered García Ortiz to pay €7,200 in fines, €10,000 in damages to González Amador, and court fees. The government will now appoint a new head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, marking the fourth leadership change under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
