European leaders will hold talks on how to respond to the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on X.
The Labour PM shared that he would convene an “emergency call” with France and Germany to “discuss what we can do urgently to stop the killing and get people the food they desperately need.”

In his strongest statement on Gaza yet, Starmer said “the suffering and starvation unfolding in Gaza is unspeakable and indefensible,” and called statehood “the inalienable right of the Palestinian people.”
Unsurprisingly, no mention was made of the hostages Hamas is still holding or the fact that Israel is in fact providing aid to the Gaza population.
The Starmer statement came hours after French President Emmanuel Macron made a surprise announcement on Thursday, July 24th, saying he would recognize Palestine as a state at the General Assembly of the United Nations in September.
According to Politico, Starmer is under pressure from his own MPs to follow Macron’s lead and announce he’ll recognize Palestin. By contrast, the German government fears recognizing Palestine could make the crisis worse.
Earlier on Thursday, the United States stated it would pull out of talks for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, who was in Europe this week for talks, said Hamas is uninterested in peace and “does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith.”
