The Dutch government announced on Thursday that it would not recognise a Palestinian state at this time, despite the public concern over Gaza. Speaking during an emergency parliamentary session, Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp stated that while the situation in the region is worsening, recognition is not planned for now.
“The Netherlands is not planning to recognise a Palestinian state at this time,” said Caspar Veldkamp.
The Netherlands’ position sets it apart from several NATO allies. France has pledged to recognise Palestinian statehood by September, and Britain has suggested it will follow unless Israel takes steps to ease suffering and agree to a ceasefire.
Veldkamp also rejected calls to suspend arms imports from Israel.
