A man is in custody following an early morning incident at Vice President JD Vance’s Cincinnati home on Monday, January 5th, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed. The suspect allegedly caused property damage, including breaking exterior windows, before being detained by Secret Service agents and taken into custody by the Cincinnati Police Department.
Authorities said the residence was unoccupied at the time. Vance and his family were already back in Washington, D.C., having returned from Ohio after overseeing the U.S. operation in Venezuela that captured President Nicolás Maduro.
Vance later posted on X
I’m grateful to the Secret Service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly. We weren’t even home as we had returned already to DC.
He described the suspect as “a crazy person” attempting to break in by hammering the windows.
Local media reported several broken windows and an extended police presence overnight. Officers reportedly remained at the property for hours, monitoring the scene, while residents were able to access their homes through marked security checkpoints.
The 2.3-acre development, valued at $1.4 million (€1.19 million), is part of Vance’s Ohio residence portfolio. He and his wife, Usha, also maintain homes in Washington, D.C., and previously in Alexandria, Virginia. Following Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, the couple moved into the Vice President’s Cincinnati home.
