In Gothenburg, Sweden, a judo club has been reported to the Discrimination Ombudsman (DO) following a dispute over traditional bowing rituals, which a Muslim family claims constitutes “indirect discrimination” against their children.

The complainant stated that as Muslims, they “only bow before God” and suggested alternative greetings; however, the club reportedly refused to agree to these terms.

The club maintains that it adheres to Swedish Judo Federation guidelines, which define bowing as a cornerstone of safety and etiquette. According to the club, uniform routines are essential to fostering a safe and equal environment for all participants.
